Matteurs Boilerplate
Sustainable waste made beautiful.
Matteurs is an Australian lifestyle brand born from one foundational principle: “Transform waste into beautiful objects”.
We elevate discarded waste and transform it into desirable objects for everyday use. We create beautifully designed, functional products using natural and sustainable waste materials such as cotton, wool or flax.
Alone we won’t fix the problem of global waste but if we can minimise waste and make an impact, we will be happy.
Who we are
Proudly Australian owned and designed, Matteurs was co-founded by Anders Gabrielsson and Matt Gilmour in 2022.
We are a lifestyle company that aims to elevate life and style without compromise.
“When it comes to design, we are material-first. Aesthetic is very important to us but without the foundation of sustainable materials, it’s not worth it.” - Matteurs

Product Range
Fast fashion made slow
Matteurs' first product range is the hand made Cotton Stone™ Collection. This is the result of years of research and development into how to use the cotton waste created by India’s fashion industry. As the world’s fastest growing apparel market, manufacturing waste is a problem that’s not going away.
We’re playing our small part by using the scrap cotton from clothing factories and transforming it into earthenware style products that are; biodegradable, lightweight, shatterproof and waterproof.
By up-cycling waste in this way, not only are we reducing post-manufacturing waste, we’re reducing demand for mass produced plastic or traditional clay and earthenware products. Being lightweight, reduces the amount of CO2 required during transportation and being shatterproof reduces waste from breakages. As each product is hand made, every vase and pot is unique and organic in appearance.
The Cotton Stone™ Collection
1. Made from cotton waste from the fashion industry.
The fast fashion industry isn’t slowing down anytime soon so we’re turning fashion’s discarded waste it into products that will be valued by design-minded people.
2. Lightweight.
The first thing that people notice is the lightness of the products. Our pieces are typically less than half the weight of earthenware equivalents. This means lighter boxes for stylists, lower shipping costs and fewer emissions for transportation.
3. Shatterproof.
All of our vases and pots can be dropped, or accidentally knocked from a mantlepiece by a soccer ball and bounce off the floor, not shatter. This is a great benefit compared to the substantial breakages that occur in the transportation of traditional vases.
4. Non-scratch.
As anyone who has slid a rough piece of ceramic over their expensive bench top or lovely French oak table will attest, it may scratch. Cotton Stone™ on the other hand, does not.
5. Waterproof.
This isn’t so much a unique benefit but it’s important to talk about. Our vases and pots are waterproof for 10 days. After which time they need a day or so to completely dry before refilling with water. We think this is pretty amazing considering they’re made from cotton. Fresh cut flowers will rarely last for 10 days anyway.
6. Ethically hand made.
Our products are hand made in India, in the heartland of the fashion waste problem. Our factory is powered by green energy, using recycled water with all local workers fairly treated and paid, with a strong emphasis on supporting women.
The Cotton Stone™ Benefits
Our manufacturing process transforms waste from fast fashion factories into unique, hand made earthenware-style vases and pots.
Here are the 6 steps:
1. SHRED
We begin our process by gathering 100% Cotton fabric waste from fast fashion factories. It is sorted and then shredded into tiny workable pieces.
2. MILL
We take the shredded waste and begin churning, agitating and milling it in recycled water to loosen the cotton fibres apart.
3. PULP
After the milling process we dry the Cotton Pulp and mix with other base materials. Creating raw Cotton Stone™.
4. SHAPE
Now that our Cotton Stone™ raw material is malleable, we begin sculpting our vases and vessels by hand.
5. PAINT
Once our hand shaping is complete we move into hand painting.
6. DRY
Unlike traditional ceramics, Cotton Stone™ does not require energy intense kiln firing. Instead we use the ever abundant resource of sunshine. After 3 weeks drying, we're ready to ship.
The Cotton Stone™ Manufacturing Process
60% — Recycled cotton fibre
12% — Natural crushed stone
28% — Plant-based starch and Glue made from Sago & Corn
.002% — Food grade preservatives
In some larger products 5% of the Natural Glue is replaced with water based synthetic adhesive
