Why we make Matteurs

India's fashion industry
generates nearly
8M tonnes of
textile waste every year.

A significant share of that waste is cotton - offcuts and scraps left behind by fast fashion manufacturing, much of which is unable to be recycled and ends up in landfill.

We think that's waste worth doing something about.

The Cotton Stone™ Collection is made from this reclaimed cotton waste, ethically handcrafted into pieces that are unique by nature. We're not claiming to solve the problem entirely, but we’d like to make a dent in it and do it in a way that sits honestly with our values.

Our Indian factory is powered by green energy, using recycled water with all local workers fairly treated and paid, with a strong emphasis on supporting women.

This is how
it happens

Shred

We begin our process by gathering 100% Cotton fabric waste from fast fashion factories. It is sorted and then shredded into tiny workable pieces.

Mill

We take the shredded waste and begin churning, agitating and milling it in recycled water to loosen the cotton fibres apart.

Pulp

After the milling process we dry the Cotton Pulp and mix with other base materials. Creating raw Cotton Stone.

Shape

Now that our Cotton Stone raw material is malleable, we begin sculpting our vases and vessels by hand.

Colour

Once our hand shaping is complete we move into several coats of hand painting.

Dry

Unlike traditional ceramics, Cotton Stone does not require energy intense kiln firing. Instead we use the ever abundant resource of sunshine. After 3 weeks drying, we're ready to ship.
